The SkilledTradesBC responds to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests in accordance with B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA). This webpage offers information about FOIPPA and the ways you may submit an FOI request to ITA.
- Freedom of Information – Makes public bodies more open and accountable by providing you the legislated right to access government records. When you request access to records, it's called a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
- Protection of Privacy – Protects your right to personal privacy by prohibiting the unauthorized collection, use or disclosure of your personal information.
What records can I request?
FOIPPA applies to all records that are in SkilledTradesBC’s custody and/or control, including personal information.
What is a record?
Records include data, documents, books, drawings, photographs, letters, vouchers, papers, and any other thing on which information is recorded or stored by graphic, electronic, mechanical or other means, but does not include a computer program or any other mechanism that produces records.
At ITA, records can also include statistical analysis of SkilledTradesBC’s data. For example, apprenticeship completion rates, or apprenticeship counts by region or trade.
What is personal information?
Personal information means recorded information about an identifiable individual other than business contact information. Examples of personal information include an individual’s name, address, email address or telephone number. Other examples are available here.
To request personal information about an individual other than yourself, you must obtain signed consent from the individual that the personal information relates to, or proof of authority that you can act on that person's behalf. SkilledTradesBC may contact the individual whose personal information you are requesting, to verify that they consent to the release of their personal information to you.
How can I make a request?
Before submitting an FOI request, visit SkilledTradesBC’s website to see if the information you are searching for is published online. Finding information on SkilledTradesBC's website may help you find the information in a faster and less expensive way. Following are links that you may find useful.
If you are unable to find the records on SkilledTradesBC’s website, FOIPPA allows you to submit an FOI request related to records that SkilledTradesBC has in its custody and/or under its control. FOI requests can be for general records or personal information and must be submitted in writing. In certain circumstances, you may submit an FOI request in other ways, for example through a telephone call if there is a language barrier.
You can also access FOI requests submitted by others by visiting ITA'S FOI Request Tracker. The tracker includes FOI requests submitted to SkilledTradesBC and the records we provided in response to the request.
If you are a training provider and you want to submit a record request to ITA, complete the Training Provider record request form.
Once SkilledTradesBC receives your request, SkilledTradesBC has 30 business days to provide you with a response, subject to any extensions permitted under FOIPPA.
Is there a cost?
FOIPPA provides you access to your own personal information free of charge. Access to all other information may be subject to a fee. Charges are based mainly on time spent searching and retrieving records, however, FOIPPA stipulates that the first three hours of search and retrieval time is free of charge. Each additional hour is charged according to FOIPPA’s regulation. Charges also apply to photocopies, printed material and requirements to produce new records (such as in response to specific data requests).
It is helpful if you describe the records including as much detail as possible as well as limiting your request to only the records you need. The more general or complex your request is, the longer it will take to process, and the greater the fees that may apply.
