Indigenous Employment Service Agencies in B.C.
How does SkilledTradesBC work with the Indigenous community?
The SkilledTradesBC works with the community-based network of Indigenous community training and employment service agencies across the province. In addition to Bands and Tribal Councils, the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) holders provide support to Indigenous people for employment and training, including in the skilled trades.
SkilledTradesBC works with these agencies, which have strong local support and contacts within the Indigenous community, by providing information and contacts. In some instances, SkilledTradesBC also funds apprenticeship training projects in partnership with the Indigenous community, industry and training providers.
What is the ISET program?
There are currently 14 ISET agreement holders in B.C., with regional service areas, to help Indigenous people prepare for, find and keep high-demand jobs now and in the long term. All Indigenous people, regardless of status, affiliation or location, may access ISET programs and services. These include job-finding skills and training, programs for youth, access to child care, and programs for urban Indigenous people and those with disabilities.
ISET agreement holders design and deliver employment programs and services best suited to the unique needs of their clients. ISET focuses on three priorities:
- supporting demand-driven skills development
- fostering partnerships with the private sector and with the provinces and territories
- placing emphasis on accountability and results
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, through its Skills and Employment Branch-Aboriginal Affairs Directorate along with Service Canada, supports ISETs, a national strategy to support Indigenous employment and training.
